FAQ
Rob Taub, Principal of Job Search Corner
responds to Frequently Asked Questions A: I don't know the 1000's of companies so I can't tell you why we are good for you and they're not. I Do know, nonetheless, that a résumé developed from a marketing perspective and grounded in the same tenets and principles that drive product marketing and advertising versus just communicating a good history with ‘improved words, organization and design’ will do a much better job getting you recognized.
Q: What guarantee do I have that your résumé will work?
A: Any "guarantee" would require reading the minds of all potential employers for they each have their own method for screening; however I CAN tell you this: Resumes that detail a career obituary of work experience are no longer useful to decision makers. A one-size-fits-all document is not in sync today with recruiters' and employers' demand for knowledge ... of what you can do for them, going forward. That is why we utilize various formats, and in so doing, we increase the probability of you standing out from the crowd.
A: We are not a "résumé mill" where your information ends up with an anonymous writer/contractor. We really get to know you and your goals, and what it is that makes you unique. That is your "Brand" and what separates you from your competition. These are not average times and consequently those who appear average, even if they aren't, will net get invited in for an opportunity. Today, you need to be a "STANDOUT" to be recognized. Branding will do that.
Q: Are you competing with career consulting and career search firms?
A: No. Job Search Corner works together, collaborating with other firms to provide clients with a full array of services. We provide the marketing communications and "branding" that for many will suffice opening doors to decision-makers. For those clients who require more elements of a marketing program, we will tailor our program to meet those needs; and for those who may require more we will do more, including, for some, a full-blown career marketing campaign.
Q: What if I have my new résumé isn't working for me?
A: Our services can include revisions during your search and also updates for years to come. We will customize any of our existing packages to better meet your particular needs, or build a new package just for you.
Q: What should I NOT have on my résumé?
A: Anything that takes away from job satisfaction. There are things you do well that you enjoy most and others that you enjoy less – call them "motivated" and "unmotivated" characteristics of your work environment, experience and accomplishments. If a distinction isn't made and 10% of what is included in your resume is in the "unmotivated" category, then you can expect 10% of your job satisfaction flying out the window before you even begin you new job. Make sense?
Q: Which of the two popular formats, Functional and Chronological, do you prefer?
A: Actually there are 10 résumé formats: Chronological Résumé, Functional Résumé, Combination Résumé, Target Résumé(developed with the job requirements in mind), Mini Résumé (brevity and utility combined), General Letter-Résumé, Proposal Letter-Résumé (letter format to specific business challenge), Unpublished Opportunity Letter-Résumé (emerging opportunities), Federal Résumé and Electronic/Scan-able Résumé.
